Words of Power

St. Ambrose develops an idea we encountered earlier, in the preaching of St. Gregory of Nyssa; that is, the sacramental principle. The most ordinary things in the world, at God’s bidding, can serve as vessels of extraordinary power, divine power. This happens, by the will of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, through the words of consecration. The Word of God, spoken in the Spirit by His anointed minister, has the power to create, to transfigure, to “do” what it says it is doing. Because these words are God’s, they have the power to transform matter and even to call forth something out of nothing. St. Ambrose traces the precedents for this mystery to the very beginning of time.
